Internships

A practical application of computer science knowledge through real-world software development and problem-solving tasks offers students insight into their classroom learning and opportunities for collaboration. To support this, the Department of Computer Science allows computer science (CS) majors to enroll in CSCI 390 (Undergraduate) or CSCI 690 (Graduate) based on a review of employment details. Enrollment in CSCI 390/690 may be repeated one time and contribute towards graduation requirements.

CS majors wanting to enroll in CSCI 390/690 must petition the department's Undergraduate Advisor or Director of Graduate Studies no later than the Friday before the internship semester begins.

  1. The proposed enrollment semester must be concurrent with the employment.
  2. Eligible employment must include at least 240 hours of CS-related work during the enrolled term. Tasks unrelated to CS academics (e.g., IT support or basic website creation) do not qualify.
  3. Petitions must include a letter (the term "internship" is not required in the letter) from the immediate supervisor or another reputable source within the hiring organization (e.g., hiring manager or human resource officer) with the following information:
    • Start/end date of employment.
    • Estimated number of hours you will be working each week.
    • A summary of your responsibilities.

To be eligible to receive CSCI 390/690 credit, majors permitted to enroll must submit to the department's Undergraduate Advisor or Director of Graduate Studies before the Friday preceding Finals Week of the internship semester:

  1. An Internship Report that describes the work performed and how their education supports their professional endeavors. To receive course credit, the work described must closely resemble the responsibilities summarized in the petition’s employer’s letter.
  2. An Employer Letter from the immediate supervisor attesting that the work described in the report accurately reflects the work performed and that the report does not contain any sensitive or confidential information.

For enrollment inquiries and more details regarding these classes, please contact the department’s Undergraduate Advisor for CSCI 390 or the Director of Graduate Studies for CSCI 690.
